¡Saca el boleto!

I wrote this script to introduce more words for Chapter 3 of Pobre Ana; the first one was Jorge el curioso. For information about how I introduce vocabulary, see my Introducing Vocabulary post. TARGET STRUCTURES

  1. no entiende nada - s/he doesn’t understand anything
  2. saca el boleto (de avión) - s/he takes out the (plane) ticket
  3. sonríe - s/he smiles

PRACTICE SENTENCES

  1. El muchacho mexicano habla pero la chica americana no entiende nada. The Mexican boy talks but the American girl doesn't understand anything.
  2. Mi padre saca el boleto de avión cuando va al aeropuerto. My dad takes out the plane ticket when he goes to the airport.
  3. La mujer sonríe mucho porque ella es simpática. The woman smiles a lot because she is nice.
  4. El estudiante no saca nada cuando la profesora dice, «¡Saca la tarea!» The student doesn't take out anything when the teacher says "Take out your homework!"
  5. El hombre sonríe cuando no entiende nada. The man smiles when he doesn't understand anything.

QUESTIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL RESPONSE

  1. ¿Tú entiendes todo en la clase de español? Do you understand everything in Spanish class?
  2. ¿Tú sonríes mucho? Do you smile a lot?
  3. En el aeropuerto, ¿muchas personas sacan boletos? In the airport, do a lot of people take out tickets?
  4. ¿Tú tienes algo o no tienes nada en tu mochila? Do you have something or do you have nothing in your backpack?
  5. ¿Quién dice, «¡Saca la tarea!»? Who says "Take out the homework?"

PERSONALIZED QUESTIONS FOR CLASS DISCUSSION

  1. ¿Tú entiendes mucho ___? (en la clase de matemáticas/ciencias/francés, sobre las chicas/la religión/la política, etc.) Do you understand much (in math/science/French class, about girls/religion/politics etc.?
  2. ¿Cuándo sacas __? (un lápiz, la basura, un boleto, una pistola, etc.) When do you take out (a pencil, a ticket, a gun, etc.)
  3. Fill a bag or purse with random, bizarre objects. Have a student pretend to be the owner of the purse. Have the student remove objects one by one. Each time, say «Clase, ¡(student) saca __ de la bolsa! ¿Por qué tiene __ en la bolsa?» (Class, student takes out __ from the purse! Why does s/he have __ in the purse?) OR you could say that it's a magic bag that knows what you need, so whatever you pull out is something you need. That allows you to get more students involved.
  4. ¿Cuándo sonríes? (or «¿Sonríes cuando __?» and fill in the blank to get them going with ideas) When do you smile (or Do you smile when __?)
  5. ¿__ te entiende? (tu mamá, tus amigos, tu hermano, tu perro, etc.) (or «¿Quién te entiende?») (Does your mom/your friends/your brother/your dog etc. understand you or Who understands you?)

SCRIPT María es una estudiante y ella va a Argentina con un grupo de la escuela. Cuando María llega al aeropuerto, un hombre sonríe y le dice en español, «¡Saca el boleto!» pero María no entiende nada. Ella sonríe pero no saca el boleto; ella levanta las manos. Entonces, el hombre repite, «No, señorita--¡saca el boleto!» pero María no entiende nada. Ella sonríe, pero no saca el boleto; ella abre su cartera y le da dinero. El hombre se pone frustrado y hace un señal así (gesture as though taking out a ticket), y repite muy lentamente, «¡Saca el boleto!» pero María todavía no entiende nada. Ella sonríe y saca una foto de su familia. El hombre no sonríe porque está muy frustrado y le grita, «¿Por qué no hablas español? ¡Saca el boleto!» María se enoja con el hombre y corre al avión sin sacar el boleto. ENGLISH María is a student and she goes to Argentina with a group from her school. When she arrives at the airport, a man smiles and says to her in Spanish, “Take out your ticket!” but María doesn’t understand anything. She smiles, but she doesn’t take out the ticket; she raises her arms. The man repeats, “No, Miss--take out your ticket!” but María still doesn’t understand anything. She smiles, but she doesn’t take out the ticket; ; she opens her wallet and gives him money. The man gets very frustrated and makes a gesture like this and repeats very slowly, “Take out your ticket!” but María still doesn’t understand anything. She smiles and takes out a picture of her family. The man doesn’t smile because he is very frustrated and he yells at her, “Why don’t you speak Spanish?? Take out your ticket!” María gets angry with the man and runs to the plane without taking out her ticket.
