Katie Sevilla just sent me the super fun story that her class created during a story asking session with the script “El amigo simpático“. (Click here to learn how to ask a story using my Matava-style scripts.) As you can see by comparing the story that her class created with the original story shared in the script post (created by my students), her students have much less violent imaginations than mine did. One thing that stood out to me as I was reading this story is that the characters are named “mustard”, “pickles”, and “mayonnaise”. Although I don’t think it was intentional in this instance, naming characters with mandatory vocab list terms is a great way to creatively get in repetitions of structures that you have to teach if you are tied to a textbook. Of course, if you force the names on students, you will lose much of the personalization power of story asking that comes through student ownership, so perhaps instead give Chiles or otherwise incentive any student that can creatively work a word from the textbook list into the story.
I formatted Katie’s class story and added clipart because that’s just what I do and so that it will make an eye catching to your class library 🙂 If you are already using this script as part of Unit 7 of my Spanish 1 curriculum, this will be an awesome reading to give your students during that unit or soon after to get them additional reps of the target structures. I am still trying to figure out the best way to make resource sharing among teachers that use my curricula easy, but until I do, I’ll just post things on the blog as folks send them to me.
