In the Northern Hemisphere, it is SPRING! And with spring comes celebrations. Many of you reading this blog teach languages that are spoken in countries with deep religious roots, and those roots are super visible in March and April! Easter, Passover, Equinox, and Ramadan are all holidays and celebrations that occur in the Spring. It brings us back to the question… should we be teaching about these holidays in public schools?
The answer to that question, of course, is not one that I can answer for you– and it’s one that I’ve written about A LOT (read here for starters).

Last year, a member of the Somos Collaboration Group asked if I was planning on sharing anything for Passover like I had for Hanukkah. I responded that I probably wouldn’t have time because I was too busy getting all the chametz out of my house… and then it hit me! Bedikat chametz! This pre-Passover tradition fits in perfectly with Unit 8 of the Somos 1 Curriculum, with Core Vocabulary being “looks for” and “finds”. TOO perfectly! I couldn’t resist.
And so, with all of the chametz gone from our house, I found myself with nothing I’d rather do than to write a little story for you to share with your students about a guy named Kyle whose mom sent him on a hunt for chametz.
