Una aventura de camping

June 30, 2011

DAY ONE Objective: Students will be able to identify the meaning of target structures for "Una aventura de camping" La Campanada (Bellwork): Students write their responses in complete sentences after they enter the room.

  1. ¿Dónde duerme Barack Obama? - Where does Barack Obama sleep?
  2. ¿Quién duerme en la clase de matemáticas? - Who sleeps in math class?
  3. ¿Tú duermes mucho o duermes poco? - Do you sleep a lot or sleep a little?
  4. ¿Cuándo duermes tú? - When do you sleep?
  • Discuss answers as a class, circling new information and ensuring understanding.

Introduce vocabulary

  • Before class, write these target structures on the board: duerme en una tienda (sleeps in a tent), oye algo (hears something), va de camping (goes camping)
  • Explain that this week, we are going to be telling a story about a camping adventure!
  • Assign a gesture to each structure
  • Circle the terms and get into some PQA.

Introduce song: Oye como va

  • Write the song title on the board.
  • First, ask if anyone is familiar with the song. If so, see if they can sing part of it or hum the melody.
  • Next, ask if anyone can figure out what the title means ("oye" and "va" are already on the board!)
  • Write up the rest of the chorus and help students understand it by looking for cognates. Explain the term "mulata", and let students know that it is not offensive in Spanish, and explain the abbreviated "pa' ".
  • Watch a music video of either Santana or Tito Puente performing the song live (NOT CELIA), since their versions have more basic lyrics.
  • Give students copies of the lyrics to Celia's version of the song.
  • Listen to Celia Cruz's version of the song, which has the more complex lyrics that are written on the worksheet. Do not show her music video, as it's a bit too racy for school.
  • As students listen, have them underline words that they recognize and sing along to the chorus.

Vocab Recap

  • Before students leave, have them pair up and stand back-to-back with their partner.
  • Count to three, then shout out one of the target structures for the day.
  • The students must quickly turn around and show their partner the correct gesture.
  • Give each structure multiple times and let the students keep track of the "score", if they want.
