Definite Article Notes

November 23, 2011

Yesterday in my Spanish A classes, students had to examine a Free Write that one of their classmates wrote last week and correct the errors in it. I found that a lot of students did not know the correct usage of definite articles in Spanish, so we talked about it a bit yesterday, and then we did grammar notes today. I like to do grammar notes from time to time to reinforce concepts that have 'popped up' in pop-up grammar lessons on multiple occasions. While it IS confusing for some students to get all of that information at once, there are many students that benefit from that kind of instruction and enjoy knowing the rules. And it's a nice change of pace every once in awhile :) It is not the best way to foster language acquisition, but I think that it is helpful to organize information that we've covered in passing in several classes. Anyway... Here is the notes sheet that I used, with the filled-in blanks on Page 2 of the document: Definite article notes I would use the notes in combination with a reading that requires error correction. An easy way to do this is to use student-generated Free Writes. Choose one that is interesting (so that students are engaged when you review/discuss/personalize it) and has mistakes with the definite articles.
