This song, "The Call", by Selena fits in very well with the novel Esperanza, by Carol Gaab. The narrator receives several important (and disturbing) phone calls during the first three chapters of the novel, and you can compare and contrast the phone call that Selena receives with the ones that Esperanza receives. The music video can be purchased on iTunes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=om3KWmuFRAA I created an activity sheet in which students have to use context and other clues to match each line of the song in Spanish with its English translation. The kids listened to the song three times while they worked on this. Then, we reviewed the answers and finally discussed the song with the comprehension questions. After that, we compared the call with the ones that Esperanza received. Download the lyrics and activity here.
