Awesome unit. I was worried at first because I know the movie and book Like Water for Chocolate would definitely not be appropriate for my middle schoolers, but the connections between food and emotions are something everyone can understand. The scene that is suggested is completely appropriate for students.

My students loved this, particularly learning about Celia Cruz. It overlapped with Black History Month and so I was also able to incorporate other afrolatinas and it was such a powerful lesson in language and love!

As usual, all of her resources are excellent, and this one is as well. It does a really good job taking a somewhat complicated movie/and ideas, and making them accessible to early language learners. Kids loved it!
