Recipe Talks is a Spanish 3 CI curriculum unit from the Huellas 1 curriculum sequence designed to build proficiency through authentic cultural content, real‑world language, and meaningful comprehensible input. In this one‑week unit, students explore food and culture through a series of authentic recipe talks, featuring Spanish speakers from across the Spanish‑speaking world explaining how to prepare traditional dishes.

This proficiency-based Spanish 3 curriculum unit provides rich opportunities for interpretive and interpersonal communication as students listen to native speakers, follow step‑by‑step processes, and engage with food‑related vocabulary in context. Each recipe includes how‑to explanations, a recipe card, and an accompanying video, allowing students to develop listening comprehension and cultural understanding through authentic input. With multiple recipes to choose from, the unit is flexible and easy to adapt to different classes and interests.

Recipe Talks can be used as a stand‑alone Spanish 3 thematic unit or as part of the full Huellas 1 curriculum sequence. The unit works well for students across levels and can be extended for higher‑level classes by increasing output expectations and depth of discussion.

  • Though the hands-on part of this unit wasn't approachable for me, I was able to pull from the other material for a food unit! I actually used it as enhancements for the Comer para vivir unit!

  • This was just what I needed to supplement my "En la cocina" unit. Students LOVED the opening stations activity. I have a very small class of 4 students, and we worked together as a group to complete each station. Gracias.

  • We had a blast following these recipes synchronously on Google Meet. Much was hard about the covid19 lockdown, this made my life easier and the students were engaged, cameras on and participating

  • The students LOVE units about food because it's one of their passions! This is such a fun unit to do with them and has such an easy cultural tie-in by using dishes from various countries and traditions.
