En guerra is a Spanish 4 CI curriculum unit from the Huellas 2 curriculum sequence sequence designed to build proficiency through music, reflection, and meaningful comprehensible input. In this 7‑day unit, students explore self‑image, identity, and adolescent mental health, examining the internal and external pressures teens face and how individuals see themselves through the eyes of others.
This proficiency‑based Spanish 4 curriculum unit supports interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational communication through songs, readings, visual analysis, and guided discussion. Using age‑appropriate resources, students build the language needed to express emotions, describe challenges, and reflect on self‑perception in thoughtful, supported ways. Instruction remains grounded in comprehension and communication rather than graphic detail, making the unit appropriate and impactful for secondary classrooms.
En guerra can be used as a stand-alone Spanish 4 thematic unit or as part of the full Huellas 2 curriculum sequence.
Note: the official music video for En guerra may not be appropriate for all school contexts; a lyric video is recommended if visual content is a concern.

Mental health is such an important topic to discuss with our youth. I am so thankful for this unit to open the doors of communication with them about a difficult-to-breach topic. Plus, the song is awesome!

I absolutely love this unit, and all of Carrie's units. I also love Sebastián Yatra and I was so excited that Carrie was willing to create and sell a quality product for this amazing song and it's complex message! The kids loved that we did a song that "wasn't just a pop song" and I agreed! Plus, we had some really meaningful conversations. I'm excited to use it again in Spanish 4 for hybrid learning!
