Eight days of Hanukkah {giveaways}

December 4, 2015

I was planning on doing "12 days of Christmas giveaways", but I figured that this would be a great opportunity for me to give a shout out to one of the many other holidays happening at this time of the year.  Just as Christmas steals the spotlight in the US, it does in Spanish speaking countries as well. It's easy for us to focus our seasonal instruction on Christmas because there are so many materials available about its celebration in the target culture, but let's not forget that there are other celebrations happening there, too. When I was in college, I took a religious studies class called "Auschwitz and After", and for my service project for the course I was paired up with a Bolivian man who was Jewish and was a death camp survivor (he moved to Bolivia after the war). My project was interviewing him and documenting his story on tape for the Rochester JCC. He was the reason that I made the fictitious narrator in my 'Mi Bolivia' lesson Jewish! (I also took a literature course in which I was placed in a book club at a local prison with a group of inmates...yeah, my alma mater is awesome.) All that to say...let's remember to represent and give voice to minorities both in our own culture and our target culture at this time of the year and always! (If anyone has great resources about holiday celebrations other than Christmas in Spanish speaking countries, I'd love to see them!).

Hanukkah starts this Sunday night, so I'll be running one giveaway each day from Sunday to Sunday. For each day of the giveaway, there will be a task to complete in order for you to be entered to win! All of the tasks will require YOU to give something to the virtual World Language teaching community, too! Because you'll have just 24 hours to complete each task, I want to give you a head's up so that you are not too crunched for time next week. Some of the more time-consuming things that you will need to do next week in order to enter are...

If you want to, you could go ahead and do one or all of these things now. Then, next week, you'll just have to reference what you posted between now and then when you want to enter the giveaway.

Other than that...start checking back here daily beginning on Sunday, 12/6! I got some great input from my Facebook followers on giveaways that would be helpful to teachers of all languages. I can't wait!
