El Festival de los Barriletes Gigantes, or the Giant Kites festival, in Santiago Sacatepéquez and Sumpango, Guatemala, is an extraordinary tradition that demonstrates the syncretism of diverse religious and cultural traditions in the area.

Mix & Match the resources from this FlexTexts set to give yourself ultimate flexibility in connecting your students with stories in Spanish that will interest them and are an appropriate challenge for their interpretive ability!

THREE different readings, at three different levels of text complexity are provided (Novice, Intermediate, Advanced). Share with each student all three levels of the text to read in sequence, or differentiate by providing different students with the level of the story that best matches their interpretive reading ability in Spanish.

Each level of the article is accompanied by a one-page, simple reading comprehension activity (3 activities total).

Each text + activity is provided as both a PRINTABLE PDF and DIGITAL GOOGLE SLIDESresource, so that you can be ready for whatever this school year brings!

  • 3 texts (5 articles x 3 versions/article)
  • 3 activities
  • Printable version of all texts + activities
  • Digital assignment version of all texts + activities
  • One simple authentic resource-based post-reading activity

  • My students completed this when I was out one day with a sick child. They got reading practice and gained some cultural knowledge. Several commented on how interesting the information was.

  • I love cultural resources about holidays from the Comprehensible Classroom. I can always count on the multiple leveled, comprehensible texts being provided. I used the easiest text and activity in my 8th grade Spanish I class, and it went well. Thank you Martina for helping me make fascinating cultural content accessible to my novices. I was going to use the most detailed version of the text with my middle school heritage class, but we ran out of time.

  • This is a great reading and I love how there are different levels for differentiation. This was a perfect review for my Sp 3 students. Mil gracias :)

  • I love sharing about other festivals and cultural practices/products, and this was an interesting one to share!

  • I appreciate that this resource includes different versions of the text for varied levels of ability. I used the more complex version with one of my upper level classes (students in their 4th and 5th years of Spanish) and the text was manageable while still presenting an academic challenge.
