If you’re a Spanish teacher, you have likely been thinking about how to share El Día de los muertos with your students since last November…or at least since your first viewing of Coco!
TEACH CULTURE AND SPANISH
When I began practicing the art of making input comprehensible, I realized that celebrations like this are gold mines for language acquisition. El Día de los muertos is fascinating to students, and they want to learn about it.
The materials that I have compiled over the years allow your students to conocer El Día de los muertos using the same language spoken by the peoples that celebrate it. From Level 1 to AP, any Spanish student can access the joy, the sorrow, the mystique of this special season.

GETTING TO KNOW THE CELEBRATION
Explore this important celebration in Spanish with leveled readings, songs, infographics, videos, and more! Use all of the materials with the same group of students to fill 3-5 class days, or divide them up between different levels for years of Día de los muertos fun!
THE MONARCH CONNECTION
“Here come the dead!” Monarch butterflies are fascinating creatures. Learn what the fourth annual generation of these iconic butterflies has to do with the Day of the Dead with this cross-curricular unit filled with biology and culture.
THE LEGEND OF THE MARIGOLD
You would be hard pressed to find an ofrenda without cempasúchil–el flor de los muertos–but why? Whether you choose to tell your students the included, simplified legend of the marigold or allow them to read it on their own, your students will benefit from this beautiful narrative.
With a film as rich in culture as Coco, we can’t let it go to waste! This bundle of plans includes four separate lesson plan sequences for you to complete in between watching segments of the movie. Learn about cultural elements such as la chancla, los perros xoloitzcuintle, El Santo, ofrendas, alebrijes, Pedro Infante, Frida Kahlo, cempasúchiles and more!
FOR THOSE WHO DON’T CELEBRATE
Parents have the right to opt their children out of curriculum content. If you have students who believe that exploring this holiday would compromise their belief system, these materials will allow them to explore a connected topic on their own. These independent work plans will provide students with 3-5 days’ worth of learning with zero mention of El Día de los muertos.
