Luis Soriano invented Biblioburro, a "donkey library" to provide access to books and education to children in rural Colombia. These unit plans provide Spanish teachers with everything needed to teach a nine-day unit (8 days of lessons plus 1 assessment day) about Biblioburro to students in late Spanish 1 and beyond.

My students were intrigued by Sr. Soriano's solution to the problem of literacy and lack of materials. We also watched a more recent video showing that he was building a library because he ran out of room in his home for all the books being donated. It also brought up the question of "literacy" and what it is, and do our state reading tests accurately measure "literacy'.
