Wir sind 1 Unit 2 – Lauf is a comprehensive 8-day German 1 curriculum unit designed specifically for novice learners. Students build their German proficiency through comprehensible stories, authentic music, interactive activities, and an exploration of the Almabtrieb tradition in German-speaking Europe.

This unit is built around the principles of Acquisition-Driven Instruction (ADI) and Comprehension-Based Communicative Language Teaching (CI), helping students acquire high-frequency German naturally as they listen, read, interact, and communicate.

Students will:

• acquire high-frequency German vocabulary in meaningful contexts
• build confidence interpreting and communicating in German
• listen to and explore the authentic German song Lauf by TJARK
• learn about German musician TJARK through novice-friendly readings
• co-create an original class story using TPRS® Storyasking
• read and retell scaffolded German stories
• develop listening and reading comprehension through CI activities
• interpret German through Picture Talk and ClipChat
• explore the Almabtrieb, a traditional cattle drive in the Alpine region
• compare Almabtrieb traditions in different European countries
• interpret authentic cultural videos
• practice identifying and using German-English cognates
• demonstrate proficiency through interpretive and presentational assessments

The unit progresses from high-frequency language and storytelling into an extended cultural exploration of Almabtrieb, using readings, videos, collaborative activities, and independent interpretation.
