"I blanked" is a simple reading activity. It works well with familiar stories or texts in class (TPRS stories that you have asked in class, MovieTalk scripts, fables, etc.). You can also use it with unfamiliar texts.
If you want to use "I blanked" as a post-storyasking activity, I do not recommend using it on the same day that the story is asked. Because it requires some prep work on your part, I recommend preparing the text for the activity before the class period in which you plan to use it.
Prepare "I blanked"
Type out the text (MovieTalk script, class story, legend, news article, etc.) that you want students to read.
Replace all or many target structures (and all forms of the target structures) from the script with a blank space.
- If you are not working with a story that had target structures, then choose 3-4 words or phrases that appear multiple times in the text, and eliminate them.
- This is very easy to do using word processing programs by using the "Find and Replace" option: just type in each target structure once and have the program find and replace all instances with a line ______.
- If you plan to project this version of the text for the activity, you probably want to number each of the spaces. If students are working with a print copy, it's not necessary.
Before "I blanked"
Have the students read the complete text or a written script of the story. This can be done as a whole-class reading using a projected text (see this for an example), or students can read a print version individually.
How to do "I blanked"
Simply tell students that all of the target structures are missing from the story, and they need to fill them in using the correct form of the structure.
You may or may not choose to give students a list of the possible missing words.
